Humanity is missing in too many workplaces

Posted on November 7, 2019

Humanity is missing in too many workplaces.

We may say people come first and that they matter, but what is the real experience of the people working in our organisations? Too often our internal behaviour and actual culture simply fails to live up to the hype and rhetoric.

The phrase ‘soft skills’ does not help our efforts to develop fundamental human skills and attitudes. Too many leaders don’t see the connection with these valuable skills and the bottom line.

For too many people their workplaces feel broken. The way we are working is all too often not working.

There is a better way.

We have choices to make every day. We can start by choosing our attitude towards other people.

We can choose to care. We can recognise people for who they are, rather than the job they do.

Just think for a moment about the impact that could have on performance and creativity in organisations? People going to work every day feeling they matter would have a positive impact for wider society.

We could choose to make this people’s normal experience of work. Talk is cheap when it comes to putting people first. We have to actually do it. This isn’t just about employees, but all the people impacted by our organisations activities. The future of work is human. #humanisingworkplaces
